Howdy from NSB Bangor, WA

I was stationed on board the USS MEYERKORD (FF 1058) from August 1985 to October 1989. I checked on board the KORD as a MM3 and left as a MM2 making MM1 off the Sept 89 exam. I was assigned to A-Gang and loved it. WESTPAC 1987, RIMPAC 1986 and several other exercises during that time. Looking for anyone who was on board during that time, especially the following if anyone has information: MM3 Osgood, Jeffrey (last seen in Longview, WA driving an 18 wheeler); MM3 Nieffenegger, Mark; MM2 McAdams, Teddy; MM3 Christenson.

Hi,

I was assigned to the Meyerkord in 1977 until I left the ship in July 1980. I was a FTM2 when I was released from the ship in Sasebo, Japan. We were on a west PAC cruise at that time. It sure seems weird to see a site about the KORD. One of my buddies on board the ship lives in St. Cloud, Mn. We have stayed in touch with each other and he was just up here for the weekend. We were reminiscing about the times on the KORD. He asked if I tried finding out about it on the Web. So I started to locate it, and presto there it was, a site about the KORD. My E-mail address is mcnexc@eot.com. I have some photo's from When it went through the ship yards, Missile launches, and various other ones that I took while on Board. I have a scanner so if you want some of them I can E-mail them.

I served aboard Meyerkord as Engineering Officer from 6/73 to 10/75. I would enjoy hearing from anyone who served aboard during that time period. Meyerkord was the first ship in the Navy to pass an OPPE on the first attempt under Commander Kerrigan. Under Commander Isaacson, we became the fourth ship on the West coast to pass an OPPE on the first attempt. We deployed to Vietnam under Commander Isaacson and returned with Commander Bruce as our CO. I have many fine memories of Meyerkord, her engineers, and her crew.

My name is Jody Gittins, and I served aboard Meyerkord from January of 1974 to November of 1976. I went through a yard period in Long Beach, where we got new electronics and the point defense missle system installed on the fantail, and also variable depth sonar. I made two Western Pacific deployments, Jan 1975-July 1975 and May 1976 to November 1976. I participated in the evacuation of South Vietnam, saved refugees in the South China Sea, saved the crew of the ship Gulf Banker (it sunk), and was on the way to liberate SS Mayaquez from the Khamer Rouge (we never made it, but were on our way). My 2nd deployment on Meyerkord we spent lots of time chasing a new Soviet turbine destroyer and also served with the USS Midway during the incident in Korea where the two US officers got their heads cut off by the North Koreans. I would like to get any pictures that are available from others. I have only one or two myself (its hard to get any when you're on the ship itself!). I would also like to correspond with any crew members who spent time on the Meyerkord in those years. I was an ETR2 and worked on the radars, TACAN, IFF, and radios. The Meyerkord was awarded and Expeditionary Medal and Humanitarian Service Medal for the evacuation of Vietnam, and for the saving of the 39 crew members off the Gulf Banker (it had a Chinese captain, Filipino crew and flew a Panamanian flag--it had damage done during a bad storm).

I served on the Meyerkord from 1976 till 1980 as a Gunnersmate. I would enjoy hearing from former shipmates. I am sending a picture taken as the Meyerkord steamed up river to visit Portland Or.

Mark,

I am glad to see the DOL. I thought you might be interested in this fact. I served aboard the USS Meyerkord from 1972 to 1975. We were stationed off the coast of Vietnam during those years. I was a GMG2 assigned to the 5"54 gun. I made 2 WESPAC tours. It was a lot of work at the time but I am very glad that I had the chance to serve. At times today I think back about the good times that we had. If you would like, I can send you more information.

As you can see in the photo, it was taken before she was renamed as a frigate.

Mark,

I was stationed with LT. Meyerkord in Vietnam assigned to River Assault Group 23 in Vinh Long. We were on a mission on 16 March 1965 when he was killed and I was seriously wounded. I have pictures and many memories which I would like to share.

Sincerely,

Mark,

The attached photo (SEE PHOTO PAGE. BOB) was taken at Treasure Island "O" Club on 14 December 1991 immediately following the decommissioning ceremony shows Adm. Baldwin (first CO of Meyerkord DE-1058) shaking hands with Harold Meyerkord (Lt. Meyerkord's father).

Sincerely,

Hi Mark,

I served on the Meyerkord commissioning crew from the summer of 1969 to September, 1972. With 30 years coming up I am wondering if any of the old shipmates are interested in a ship reunion. I was an ET in the radio shack and worked in CIC.

Thank You for your page.

I will start going throught all my material for the ship. It has been a long time since I was there. I put her in commission and served aboard her for three years. I was part of the pre-commissioning crew. If you can think of anything in patricular that you need please let me know.

My name is Chuck Foyt. I was an EM2 and I served aboard the Meyerkord from 2/76 through 11/79.

We made a WestPac for most of 1976 homeported during that time in Yokouska, Japan. Meyerkord paid a port of call to Portland Oregon in 1977 for the Rose Festival. we took the mighty Meyer through overhaul in Portland, Oregon during most of 1978. I probably have numerous photos of the Meyerkord in my Navy archives, some during her dry dock period mentioned above. I would certainly like to hear from some old shipmates.

Any chance of the USS Meyerkord DE1058 (FF1058) getting a page? I will dig through my old photos and see if I can find my photos. I did come across a photo of her alongside the USS Lang DE1060 on her page.

Thanks,

Hello Mark,

My name is John Wells and I served aboard the U.S.S. Meyerkord DE-1058. I am curious as to it's fate? Also in getting contact with fellow shipmates. I was on board from 1969 to 1972. If you could help out I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Dear Mr. Roberts, (no pun intended)

I just finished watching Evening Magazine and saw the program about the Whipple...

I was stationed onboard USS Meyerkord (FF-1058) from 8/88 to 1/90 in San Diego and USS Connole (FF-1056) from 12/90 to 2/92 in Newport, RI.

I was an EW2(SW) frocked when i was discharged. I also served TAD onboard USS Gray (FF-1055), USS Ramsey (FFG-2?), USS Scofield (FFG-3?). I served very limited time onboard, they were being decommissioned and sold to the Pakistani's. Some of the other FF's I remember in San Diego, San Francisco and Long Beach were:

Marvin Shields
Gray
Knox
Roark
Downes
Barbey
Francis Hammond
Reasoner
Fanning

A very good friend of mine served onboard USS Hoel (DDG-13) in San Diego, he could be some help if needed. We served together on board Connole in RI...

Write me if you need help with anything.

I was looking through the net and found your web page. I don't know where all my stuff is right now, probably storage, but I was on USS Meyerkord FF-1058 from 79-81, made a westpac in '80, was involved in a collision and some flooding. Then I transferred to USS Ramsey FFG-2 for a year until 82. Then I wasn't on a ship again until 90-91, on USS LaSalle, AGF-3 during the war. I have some stuff and would like to see some of my ships on the web. If you could give me an idea of what you need or don't want. I can look for pictures (later) I have a cruise book. I just wish we had made like, between cruise books, because I don't have anything from the other ships, even though we spent time on them and made lots of friends.

Oh, I am still in the Navy Reserves, and work at the Pacific Missile Range Facility, PMRF, in Kauai, Hawaii and deal with the new ships that come out here for training and work ups. We do all the Aegis training. Let me know if you could use any of that stuff, for the newer ones. RIMPAC is starting in July and we are going to sink two ships, the ex-USS Badger (FF-1071) and the ex-USS Sommers, but I am not sure which one. I might be able to get you something on those. If you have wild ideas, let me know and I might be able to track something down for you from this end. Keep up the good work,

Clay Crawford
